Technically,
DORA is not a Lexile assessment. Lexile is a readability scale of text.
DORA provides a Lexile equivalency score, which is the highest level comprehension passage a student has read and demonstrated mastery of by answering questions correctly.
Scores may vary between DORA and a Lexile assessment like SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) because of test format. SRI uses short passages and allows look back. SRI also has grade-level vocabulary embedded in its passages which makes it harder for ELL students, who may have good comprehension strategy skills but lack the necessary vocabulary to demonstrate mastery. DORA has longer passages which increase in length as the grade level of the passage goes up. It also uses non-fiction, which is a harder genre for test-takers. DORA does use lower vocabulary in its passages since there is a separate vocabulary measure. So, the Comprehension sub-test is less biased by vocabulary, and comprehension skills can actually be isolated and tested.
